About the Site

The chronology of my interest in architecture is very simple. Following are important bullet points.

  • Ages 3-17: Periodically bombarded with my father’s knowledge and trivia of New York building history.
  • Age 18: Departed for college in the horizontal suburbs of Los Angeles. Upon my return to New York, I started looking up at buildings, and discovered  that there’s a lot more to see above eye level.
  • Age 23: Got contact lenses, so I can see detail on buildings. Coincident with my first photographic expedition to document what I see. Also coincident with starting this blog.

I don’t have any training or knowledge of architecture, but I hope to change that as I read books on the styles I see. As that happens, I will be adding more metadata to this site to reflect my knowledge.

I try to avoid iconic buildings, as you tend not to look at any details on them; you only measure your view against the “postcard” view emblazoned in your mind. Anyway, those buildings are so well documented, I’m not sure I could possibly add anything. That said, those pictures might find their way on here.

You might also want to check out my personal blog, as I sometimes detail my excursions that generate the photos that show up on this site.

Is this a site which lets anyone post their own photos of NYC buildings? If so, how does one post? If not, then no problem – I enjoy looking at your photos, and am glad someone else also enjoys taking photos of building details. Please take more shots on West 57th Street (where I’ve lived for 30 years), and keep up the good work.

This is just my own stuff, but if you’d like to send me something, I’d consider posting it with attribution.

Thanks for the support.
