CUNY’s Little Gem

Miscellaneous

In the last week, I have talked to two people who graduated from Baruch a few decades ago (one as an undergrad about 35 years ago, the other as an MBA probably 45 years ago), and who had only glowing praise for the school. I know that CUNY has changed a lot since then with relaxed admission standards, but I can’t help but think that my new affiliation places me in prestigious company.

It certainly churns out nicer people on average as actually they receive a great value. Prestige is overrated, likability and cute “mistakes” are nice to hear. Its peer ratings are not great and never will be great but the people who end up going are persistent and more reliable.
Columbia is filled with graduates who need to pay off a loan shark, i.e. whatever student loan company they went with. NYU students are more interesting but tend to be subject to too much investment.
Prestige is good to believe in but people associated with prestigious institutions tend to be utterly vapid and in the end, undeniably lacking in something “human.”

Perhaps “prestigious” was the wrong word — I think I meant “good”, as in “good company” :)
